If you’ve been asked to provide a “certified translation” for the Home Office or another UK authority, it’s important to understand how the system works.

There is no official list of “approved” or “Home Office certified” translators in the UK. However, certified translators are registered members of Professional Organisations such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists [CIOL]

How do you choose a certified Translator you can trust if you don't know the target language and you don't want your visa/settled status or citizenship application rejected?

✔️ A valid certified translation must include:

  • A full and accurate translation of the original document
  • A signed statement confirming it is a “true and accurate translation”
  • The translator or company’s contact details and their credentials, such as Membership Number with the Chartered Institute of Linguists [CIOL].
  • The date of translation

⚠️ Be cautious of:

  • Companies claiming to be “Home Office approved” or “government certified”
  • Websites with no UK company registration details
  • No identifiable translators or professional credentials

🎓 Look for:

  • Membership of recognised bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) or the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI)
  • A registered UK company with a verifiable presence
  • Clear accountability and contact details
