One of the significant differences between translating and interpreting is that communication is written if the text is translated and oral if the discourse is interpreted.
Translation implies decoding the source document, understanding with accuracy the message and intention of the text and its author and analysing the context and formatting of the document, in order to reproduce the same features in the target language, whilst bearing in mind the target readers and their culture. The translator should have a keen eye for detail in order to convey the subtleties of each text into a different language (the translator's mother tongue). Knowledge of two or more languages does not suffice for translating. A translator is a qualified professional with accurate knowledge about culture, subject matter, grammar, terminology and appropriate usage of language in the target market. Translation rates are mainly based on the number of words of the source text, the field of specialization, turnaround times and formatting guidelines.
Interpreters facilitate communication between speakers of different languages and therefore they should understand with accuracy what is said in one language to be able to render the same message into another language. Common forms of interpreting include consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. Simultaneous interpreting is about translating a message in the target language at the same time as the speaker of the source language keeps on speaking. The interpreter sits in a sound-proof booth, hears the source language speaker via earphones and speaks to the target language listeners via a microphone whilst they listen via earphones.
Consecutive interpreting is about rendering a message in the target language when the speaker of the source language pauses or finishes short segments of speech. The speaker and interpreter take turns to convey the same message in different languages. The speaker comes first and then the interpreter translates the message into the target language. For instance, an interpreter would make communication easier between English and Spanish speakers in a business meeting or conference. Since interpreting exerts great demand on concentration and memory skills, the job on each session is often shared between two or more professionals. A person is able to interpret consecutively up to an hour, and simultaneously, up to half an hour and requires half an hour break to be able to keep on interpreting. For that reason, interpreting teams of two professionals are effective, i.e, one of the interpreters can take a break whilst the other takes over during the meeting, conference or lecture. Editing is about comparing source and target texts to ensure that the translation is accurate and faithful to the source text.
